Taking Care Our Environment
Students love creating writings using the app, Book Creator! Adding pictures to support ideas and personalizing the pages engages children in the writing process. In one of our genre units, third graders learn all about taking care of our environment and protecting animals. We read The Lorax by Dr. Suess and the students are asked to interpret what message the author is trying to share with his readers. They then create a book to explain their thinking. To learn more about protecting animals, students conduct research on an endangered animal. They are provided with helpful websites and look up information on their iPads in class. Students use graphic organizers to help them record their findings and then create a book all about their endangered animal. Here is an example of a student's endangered animal book and a student's book interpreting an author's message. These third graders show their creativity and personalities in their writings and really took ownership of the assignments.

Sharing Our Writings on SeeSaw
Students create an online portfolio using the app SeeSaw! They work collaboratively with classmates and record videos of their work. Parents can even view their child's personal portfolio. Our four main writing units of study are Personal Narrative, Personal Essay, Informational, and Research and Content Area Writing. We focus on these units for months and participate in many mini lessons to strengthen students' writing skills. The third graders write rough drafts, engage in peer-reviews and teacher conferencing, and compose an impressive final copy. Students work so hard on their writings and are very proud of their accomplishments. They love to record their work on SeeSaw so they can share their pride with their peers and parents. Here is an example of an informational book and a literary essay written by two students. Sam does a wonderful job breaking up his main topic, soccer, into subtopics and describing them in detail in his informational book. Amari creates a strong thesis statement in his literary essay and backs it up with examples from his chosen story.

Learning About Our Great State, Michigan
Students learn all about our great state of Michigan throughout our social studies units. At the end of the year students create a Michigan project and a Michigan paper related to a top of their choice. Some topics are Michigan cities, Michigan sports teams, vacation areas, famous Michiganians, the Mackinac Bridge, etc. Students make a poster, collage, diorama, 3-D display, or model about their Michigan topic. We ask students to have fun and be creative! Each project also includes a five-paragraph research paper. Students gather research from the Internet and books from the Library to help with their research. We then have a "Made in Michigan Museum" in the gymnasium to showcase the students' accomplishments! Parents and other classes visit the museum to check out the third graders' amazing work. The students demonstrate pride and joy when they discuss their Michigan topic. Here are some examples of creative Michigan projects.
Creating QR Codes
We use the app, Shadow Puppet, to take pictures of work we are proud of. Students can then record themselves talking about their work or reading their stories. Finally, the third graders create QR codes so they can share their accomplishments. Here is an example of how we used Shadow Puppet to share letters we wrote to Santa Claus! The QR codes were hung in the hallway by our classroom so we could share them with the school. The third graders also mailed their QR codes to the North Pole. Here is an example of Ella reading her letter to Santa. She does a great job composing her letter and provides detail.
