A lot of learning happens in Room 208!
I am a proud Fraser teacher and I teach all subjects in 3rd grade at Salk Elementary. We are an innovative district and believe in providing our students with the best educational experience possible. Our vision is to be an exemplary 21st Century learning community where students' needs come first.
Our Mindset
I promote a Growth Mindset in my classroom and encourage children to challenge themselves. We view failure as an opportunity to grow and we learn from our mistakes. My classroom is a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things. We learn a lot from each other and we love to collaborate and brainstorm ideas.

Our Classroom Layout
Because collaboration is so important in my third grade room, I believe in flexible seating. As a teacher, I provide experiences to my students every day in my classroom. I want these experiences to be meaningful and authentic so I need to ensure that my classroom space is designed to support that. Students are seated in groups throughout the classroom because they participate in table talks and group work often. I also have a bean table at the back of my room and this is where I like to pull small groups to provide individualized instruction. At the front of the classroom there is a Promethean board and a large carpet area. I also work with small groups in this area where students enjoy participating in interactive lessons using the Promethean board. The third graders love utilizing the large carpet area because they can sit with peers using cushioned crates and beanbags to collaboratively work. Collaborative learning promotes increased engagement, motivation and achievement and it's a big part of our classroom culture. I want to set my students up for success and I believe that my student-centered classroom is a great educational environment where third graders experience meaningful learning.
Our Learning
English Language ArtsWe follow the Daily 5 framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. We have a leveled library and students fill their book bags with a variety of fiction and non-fiction books. Students also meet in guided reading groups to work on specific skills using just right books.
We also love to write in 3rd grade! We start our writing time with a mini-lesson that focuses on a skill or writer's craft. We then apply what we learned to our writings. Our four main units of study are Personal Narrative, Personal Essay, Informational, and Research and Content Area Writing. |

MathWe use the Eureka Math program in our classroom to help connect math to the real world. Students are given many opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and this helps to take the fear out of math and build student confidence. I help my students achieve true understanding lesson by lesson.
We also work really hard to master our multiplication facts in 3rd grade! We take weekly online tests and practice our facts using a website called Xtramath. |
Science & S.SStudents love to engage in hands on science and social studies lessons. In social studies we learn all about our great state of Michigan and take a trip to our state capital, Lansing! In science we conduct a lot of experiments and work collaboratively with peers. Our units of study are Light and Sound, Earth and Me, Changes in Motion, and Organisms Have Character.

Learning Management SystemWe use the learning management system (LMS), itslearning, to create online content and to communicate with students and parents. Each child has a username and password and is enrolled in different courses. Parents can view their child's homeroom course to read about important classroom information.
Parents can visit https://fraser.itslearning.com with their child's username and password to check out what we're doing in class! |
